Liver Disease: How to Qualify for Social Security Disability

The liver is the largest organ in the body, and its primary function is to help the body digest food, store energy, and remove toxic substances.  There are many different types and causes of liver disease. For instance, some liver diseases are drug or alcohol induced, such as cirrhosis.  Viruses; including hepatitis can cause other types of liver disease.  The broad category of liver disease also includes liver cancer.

The symptoms of liver disease can vary depending on the type of illness.  An alcoholic liver disease may cause weakness, fatigue, weight loss, vomiting, and jaundice.  A person with an end-stage liver disease may even experience liver failure and require a liver transplant.

Liver disease is a condition that is specifically listed in Social Security’s Blue Book listings of impairments.  To be found disabled based on the listing requirements, a claimant must prove that their condition meets or equals the severity level detailed in listing 5.05.  The provisions of this listing are met when specific laboratory findings or medical documentation support that the liver disease has reached the requisite severity level.

Liver cancer is one of the named conditions on the compassionate allowance list.  Conditions on this list are considered so severe that SSA must provide benefits quickly to applicants who have a condition on this list.  A claimant who has liver cancer may also be disabled based on meeting a listing.  A claimant with medical documentation proving the presence of a tumor of the liver, gallbladder, or bile duct should meet the requirements of listing 13.19.

Even if a claimant’s liver disease does not meet the requirements of a Blue Book listing or a compassionate allowance, they can still be found disabled based on the physical and mental limitations caused by their condition.  For instance, a person suffering from severe fatigue, nausea, and vomiting on a frequent basis may not be able to maintain the required attendance and punctuality required by full-time, sustained employment.

Premier Disability Services, LLC has extensive experience with assisting claimants who are disabled due to liver disease.  If you are suffering from this condition and are unable to work, please contact our office for a free evaluation of your claim.
