August is Spinal Muscular Atrophy Awareness Month

Posted August 7, 2015 by Premier Disability Services, LLC® August is national spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) awareness month. This is the leading generic cause of death in babies under the age of two. Individuals suffering from SMA have difficulties with basic activities such as breathing and swallowing. It is important to spread awareness of this devastating disease and try to find a cure for a condition that affects approximately 1 in 10,000 babies.

Illness and Depression

Posted July 31, 2015 by Premier Disability Services, LLC® A doctor once said to me “Everybody diagnosed with cancer gets depressed.” I cannot speak for everybody. I know I got depressed after my diagnosis. Facing illness, whether it is acute like cancer, or chronic like arthritis, can be depressing. The National Institute of Health (NIH) acknowledges, as do most health professionals, that chronic medical conditions can lead to any number of depressive symptoms and disorders. Depression is one of the most common complications of chronic illness. We often see this with clients at Premier Disability.
