This Week is National my Social Security Week

The Social Security Administration has implemented a campaign to raise awareness about the benefits of opening a secure online my Social Security account.  SSA has enlisted the assistance of various groups and organizations nationwide to help with this effort.  Through this campaign, this week has been deemed “National my Social Security Week.”  From April 4 through April 13, SSA will host numerous events and activities across the country aimed at promoting the benefits of a secure online account with SSA.  The benefits include:

  • –Keeping track of your earnings and verifying them every year;
  • –Getting an estimate of your future benefits, if you are still working;
  • –Getting a letter with proof of your benefits, if you currently receive them; and
  • –Managing your benefits:
    • -Change your address;
    • -Start or change your direct deposit;
    • -Get a replacement Medicare card; and
    • -Get a replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S for tax season.

Many of our clients do not realize the benefits of creating an online account with SSA.  We often hear the horror stories of clients walking into their local SSA field offices and being required to wait for hours before they receive service.  We always encourage our clients to first check online to see if the service they are seeking can be done via their my Social Security account.

On Thursday, April 7, 2016, SSA held a “check your statement day” to encourage people to check their Social Security statement online.  For Social Security Disability claimants, it is important to check your statement because it will provide you with an idea of how much your monthly benefit will be in the event you are awarded.  It can also allow you to verify that all of your past earnings have been properly documented.
